Knowing your moving costs
As you start to plan and prepare for your move it is important to understand all of the costs that go into moving. In this situation you need to think about the before, during and after moving costs. You need to think about how much each phase of the move will cost you to help you be better prepared.
Will you need packing supplies?
When you would like to understand the overall cost of a move you need to separate it into different parts/services you will require. Sometimes things such as buying packing supplies can be something you weren't totally expecting. Packing yourself will save you money in the long-run but sometimes you may not have time to pack a whole household before you need to move.
We do offer full packing services for boxes, fragile items, antiques, etc. if you require it for your move. We can add specific packing for whatever it is that you need to have professionally packed for you. If there are things that you can pack on your own we can also make suggestions as to where to get your packing supplies.
How will you be traveling to your destination?
Make sure that you choose the best type of travel for your move. Most of the time customers will drive to their new home and other times they fly and have their vehicles shipped. If you are driving you should consider what you are able to take with you in your car to cut down on overall moving costs. If your drive requires you to stay over night for a day or two you need to factor in the cost of lodging, food and of course gas.
More than likely you will beat the movers to your destination so you need to make sure you are prepared to survive a day or so before your items are delivered. If you are moving close to family or friends, consider staying with them until your items arrive.
What other costs may there be in your new city?
You may also incur costs at your destination that you might not have been prepared for - increased cost of living in general, parking costs, utility costs and entertainment. You need to make sure to do your research and make sure you are able afford to live in your new city because there can be some things you need to get used to. You also need to consider closing costs on your home, paying for inspections and appraisals and the tranferring of taxes and fees because you're moving to a new location. Another thing to think about is the time that you may have to take off of work to deal with all these things.
Are you or your spouse planning to take days off work?
You may need to take a few days off just to focus on the closing of your house and make sure everything is in order. You may have PTO, vacation or sick time that you can use for this. Otherwise, you will need to calculate in money lost for missed days of work. If your move is part of a work relocation you should ask your employer if they can help you with PTO or vacation days to offset this.
Is there still time for you to pack?
You may need packing services if you don't think you will be able to finish the job on your own. If you are in this situtation or would just rather leave it to the professionals then we can definitely help! On the day of your move the crew will arrive to start packing all your boxes of clothing, kitchen items, china, TVs, mirrors, etc. Having a full service packing job with your move will definitely cut down on the stress and headache that goes along with packing a whole household.
Consider needed time off once the move is over
Going through a major interstate move can be exhausting, both mentally and physically. You should consider that you may need a couple days off to recover before you start at your new place of employment if possible.
All in all, moving out of state can be a stressful headache! Taking time to consider and plan out all the details of your move will just make it that much easier on you in the end. Give us a call to help you start your moving journey!
