Tips for moving during the summer - the busiest time of year for moving!

Moving during the summer is the best option for lots of people for various different reasons - kids being out of school, vacation time, weather, home buying is at it's peak, etc.

Nonetheless, a summer move isn’t a walk in the park. The hot climate can make your summer move really strenuous. You need to plan and organize properly to make your move a success.

If you're planning a long distance move this summer here are some tips to help it go a bit smoother.

Start Planning ASAP

Since summer is the busiest time of year for the moving industry it is important to get a head start on the tasks that you have to complete. During the summer months, reputable companies calendars get filled up quickly so it's important to do your research and schedule with a moving company as soon as possible. Booking a moving company a couple months before your move date will ensure that you get the best possible price and have priority over the days you plan to move.

Research Reputable Licensed Moving Companies

When you are looking for a moving company it can sometimes become overwhelming. You may be getting a million phone calls from different companies that you've never heard of so it is important to do your research. It's good to get a couple different quotes so you know what is out there and make sure you are comparing apples to apples with the different companies. You may have an wide array of pricing which can get confusing. Make sure you pay attention to the cubic footage of each quote because that is a huge factor in the pricing.Ask for discounts, look up the companies on the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and ask your sales rep questions. The more informed you are the better decision you will be able to make and it will also help your moving company know your expectations for the move.

Start Packing Sooner than Later

The sooner you start packing the more time you will have to space it out. Rushing to pack at the last minute can be stressful and unorganized. Take your time to organize your belongings in a way that makes sense and will also make your unpacking easier. Space the packing out over days or even weeks - choose to pack non-essentials first and perhaps go room by room.

Avoid Common Packing Mistakes

When packing your items there are some mistakes that you should avoid. Not only can these mistakes cost you time but will slow down your packing momentum. Here are some of the most common packing mistakes:

Leaving packing for move day

Starting to pack without a plan

Not taking time to sort/get rid of certain items

Leaving empty spaces in boxes

Overfilling your boxes

Packing old or unused items

Using sub par quality moving supplies

Forgetting to pack and essentials box

Assuming that you may not need an essentials box

These mistakes can cause things to be disorganized and more stressful than necessary.

Get Your Family and Friends Involved

Moving over the summer can be a huge task and it's okay to ask for help. Employing your friends and family to help you pack and organize can be fun but also extremely helpful. Make sure everyone is on the same page with the packing and organization.

It's Okay to Take Breaks

If you start packing in advance you will have time to finish up all your tasks so you don't have to overwhelm yourself with work. Although there is a lot of work that goes into packing, you should still take time to relax a bit as to not overwork yourself.

Move on Less Busy Days if Possible

Although summertime is the peak moving season there are some times of the month that are less busier that others. The beginning and end of the month as well as weekends tend to be the busiest times. If you have the option to move during the week sometimes you can get a better rate for your move too since the availability is there. One way to avoid this if at all possible is to book about 45-60 days in advance if possible. This will help you get the best rates and ensure that your move dates are solid and not in danger of unavoidable delays.

Some Things to be Cautious of When Packing

The summer heat can really get to certain items and be aware when you are packing these items. Not everything will make the trip in a hot moving truck. Here are some examples:

Candles - these can melt and get all over your other belongings that you have packed with them

Sensitive Electronics - laptops, tablets, smartphones and small TVs

Music/Electronic Items - instruments, vinyl records, DVDs/Blu-Rays, cassettes and CDs can all warp and be damaged due to excessive heatMake sure that all these belongings are packed appropriately and carefully.

These items are things that you should maybe consider placing them in your car.

Plan for the weather

Summertime weather can be unpredictable - unexpected downpours, inclement weather, etc. Wrapping and packing items in plastic bins and shrink wrap will help protect your items more than just cardboard.  Make sure to check the weather leading up to your move so you can be more well prepared. The movers will also be able to help you weatherproof furniture items so that nothing gets damaged or wet while moving out to the truck.

Try for an Early Morning Pickup

Plan ahead of time to ask if it is possible for the movers to arrive early in the morning when it's not as hot. Moving is strenuous even when you hire professional movers so it's best to stay hydrated - and keep your movers hydrated too! Wearing light clothing and sunscreen is also a good tip to make sure that you stay safe and comfortable in the summer heat.

The increased demand and decreased availability of moving during the summertime can cause added stress to your already stressful move. Planning ahead and taking certains steps will help you have a more sucessful and pleasurable move. Having friends and family help can take a lot off your plate and help you to stay focused on the tasks at hand.
